On Tuesday, 1 June, the Saeima adopted amendments to the Law on Administrative Territories and Populated Areas from which it follows that the Madona municipality is maintained within existing borders, and the local government elections on June 5 will take place also in this electoral district. At the same time, in the election of the Madona municipality council a different time is determined for early voting, which will be on 3 June from 16:00 to 20:00 and on 4 June from 11:00 to 20:00.
It was originally planned to add the Varakļāni municipality, whose addition to the Rēzekne municipality was declared by the Constitutional Court to be inconsistent with the Constitution, to the Madona municipality, but the Saeima members decided after long discussions, as a temporary solution, to determine that the municipality of Varakļāni would be a separate municipality.
Previously, the Saeima's Administrative Territorial Reform Commission submitted the draft law prepared by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development for consideration at the extraordinary meeting of the Saeima on 31 May, which provided for the inclusion of the town of Varakļāni, the rural municipality of Varakļāni and the rural municipality of Murmastiena in the Madona municipality.
At the same time, the municipal elections scheduled for 5 June in the Rēzekne municipality have been cancelled. The law on elections in the Varakļāni municipality and the Rēzekne municipality, adopted by the Saeima today, foresees the holding of municipal elections on 11 September of this year. It is planned that the newly elected Varakļāni municipality council and Rēzekne municipality council will hold its first meeting on 1 October this year. The term of office of the new municipal councils will be terminated at the moment when the relevant municipal council elected in the 2025 municipal elections will meet for the first meeting.
The Central Election Commission has ordered the election commission of the municipality of Madona to begin immediately preparing for the elections of the Madona municipality council of 5 June, so that polling stations are prepared to ensure early voting on Thursday, 3 June, at 16.00.
