The Saeima elects the Central Election Commission

Riga, March 21: Today the election of the Chairman and members of the Central Election Commission took place in the Saeima. Kristīne Bērziņa, who until now has been heading the Central Election Commission's Information Department, was elected as the Chairperson of the Central Election Commission. As members of the Central Election Commission were elected Edgars Baldunčiks (New Unity), Ritvars Eglājs (National Alliance "All For Latvia!" - "For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK"), Sofija Grīnvalde (“KPV LV”), Dzintra Kusiņa (Greens and Farmers Union), Aleksandrs Maļcevs (Social Democratic Party "Harmony"), Sigords Stradiņš (New Conservative Party) and Valdis Verners (For Development/For!).

The Law On the Central Election Commission states that the Saeima should establish the Central Election Commission no later than six months after the meeting of the new Saeima, and the Central Election Commission shall consist of nine members, of which the Chairman and seven members of the Commission shall be elected by the Saeima, and one member from among the judges shall be elected by the Supreme Court at its general meeting.

The decisions of the Saeima of 21 March regarding the election of the chairperson and members of the Central Election Commission will take effect on 22 March.
